Introduction

The individuals suffering from mental illness, having some kind of mental imbalance which could be the result of a variety of personal circumstances or other genetic problem, he/she is condemned and virtually isolated from the society. This is indeed extremely pathetic and needs urgent attention of all right thinking persons towards the restoration of mental health of the affected person and his ultimate rehabilitation.

Global Impact

One will be shocked to know that about 300 million people worldwide are suffering from bad mental health.

 

According to WHO, India is the most depressed country in the world followed by China & USA.

7.5% Indians suffer from major or minor mental disorders.

The WHO report states that depressive disorders are characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration.

56 Million individuals suffer from Depression.

Depression is a major public health problem in India, contributing to significant morbidity, disability as well as mortality, along with significant socio-economic losses.

38 Million individuals suffer from Anxiety Disorders

Shortage of Medical Professionals


There is an extreme shortage of mental health workers like Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and Doctors to look after such a big population of mentally disturbed persons.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

To provide long term custodial care for the PMIs, especially for those whose parents are old or no more.

To establish a Vocational Training Centre to make them independent.

To run day care center and respite homes for IID’s/PMI’s.

To guide parents for various facilities under PWD Act.
